Ordering puzzles give a few clues about who finished, stands or lives where, and ask about one position. Draw a line and place people on it.
Start with the tightest clues. "Immediately before" glues two people together. "Didn't finish last" only rules out one spot, so leave it until the end. Plain "before" clues set an order but leave gaps.
After each clue, ask what is still possible. When the question only needs one position, you may not have to finish the whole order.
Some puzzles don't give enough to decide. If two different orders both fit every clue and put different people in the asked position, the honest answer is Can't tell. Tests include that option on purpose, so check it before you guess.
