Rotation questions show a shape and ask which option is the same shape turned, or which is a mirror image. Turning a shape round on the page never produces its mirror image, so the trick is to tell the two apart quickly.
Track two things:
- A marker. Each shape here has one black square. Note where it sits: at an end, a corner, next to a bump.
- The order around the outline. Go clockwise from the marker and name what you meet: "long arm, then a bump". A turned shape keeps that order. A flipped shape reverses it.
Don't try to spin the whole shape in your head at once. Turn the option until its longest part lines up with the original's, then check the marker and the order. Shapes turned 180 degrees catch people most: everything looks upside down, but the order around the outline is still the same.
