Interviewers often ask an open question: "What ideas do you have to raise revenue?" A long list said in random order sounds unstructured, however good the ideas.
Instead, name two to four buckets first, then fill each one:
- Pick buckets that cover the space, the same way you build an issue tree: who (new vs existing customers), how (price vs volume), or where (inside vs outside the company).
- Fill each bucket with two or three ideas.
- Check the balance. Ten ideas in one bucket and none in another means you missed something.
- Merge duplicates. "Run ads" and "do more marketing" are one idea.
Then say which idea you'd test first, and why.
"How could Larkfield Museum raise more money?"
Earn more per visitor: dynamic ticket prices, café, shop bundles
Bring more visitors: late openings, school trips, tourist passes
Money beyond visitors: members, donors, renting the hall for events
Three buckets, three ideas each: easy to follow and hard to beat for coverage.
