Descriptions explain what a dataset means at its declared grain. A useful model description names the entity, the inclusion rule, and an important limitation. Column descriptions clarify identifiers and measures.
A docs block stores longer Markdown that a description can reference with doc, avoiding repeated definitions across the project. Documentation belongs with the code so a change can update both together.
An exposure records a downstream use such as a dashboard, its owner, and its dependencies. It adds context to lineage even though dbt doesn't build the dashboard itself. Generating docs assembles project metadata; it doesn't make a misleading description true.
These tasks add ownership and meaning to a clean staged model. Use fictional example.test addresses for the exercise owners, and keep operational secrets out of documentation.
