Case study: clinic no-shows
From: Dr. Neha Kapoor, practice manager, Valley Family Health (a fictional practice)
About: Missed appointments in March
Missed appointments cost us a slot each time. Using March's appointment log for our three clinics, I'd like each clinic's no-show rate, how far ahead the missed appointments had been booked, and which weekday has the most no-shows, so we can decide where to add reminder calls.
This case works through a typical operations question in a healthcare setting. The log has one row per appointment; the answers come from counting rows that meet conditions.
A helper column turns each date into a weekday number with WEEKDAY. Pay attention to its second argument: return type 2 numbers the week Monday = 1 to Sunday = 7, which matches the table you'll fill. COUNTIFS and AVERAGEIFS do the rest, and INDEX with MATCH names the worst day.
All patients, clinics and figures are made up.
=WEEKDAY(B2,2)
=COUNTIFS($C$2:$C$25,I2,$F$2:$F$25,"No")
A weekday helper column, then a two-condition count.
