COUNTIF counts the cells in a range that meet one condition:
=COUNTIF(range, criteria)
The criteria can be:
- Text, in double quotes:
"Closed". It isn't case-sensitive.
- A number:
100.
- A comparison, also in quotes:
">250", "<=0", "<>Closed" (not equal). Leave the quotes off and Excel refuses the formula.
- A cell:
F2. Then the condition comes from whatever F2 holds, so one formula serves a whole summary table.
- A wildcard:
"TX-*" matches anything that starts with TX-; ? stands for one character.
To combine an operator with a cell, join them with &: ">"&F2.
