A branch is a movable name for a commit. Creating a branch does not switch your working context unless you use a combined creation command. Keep the current main branch when the request asks only for a saved reference. A tag has a different purpose and does not substitute for a branch. These tasks preserve a baseline under a new branch name while leaving the active work where it started. Inspect names and the active marker afterward. For example, creating backup from main leaves the active marker beside main. A later main commit does not move backup until you update that reference. This makes the saved baseline easy to identify.
