A configuration item represents something managed to deliver services, such as infrastructure or an application. The configuration management database stores CIs and their relationships. An asset record tracks ownership and financial or lifecycle concerns. A physical laptop can have related asset and CI records, but the two purposes aren't identical.
The Common Service Data Model gives guidance for consistent service data relationships. It helps connect business and technical service concepts rather than treating every object as an unrelated row. Use the intended CI class and relationship direction. A familiar display name doesn't prove two records represent the same object. When investigating impact, inspect service relationships and record quality before drawing a dependency conclusion. The simulator shows original CI records and basic references; it doesn't claim automatic discovery or a complete enterprise service model.
